5 Ways To Add Heat To Your Deep Conditioning Treatment

5 Ways To Add Heat To Your Deep Conditioning Treatment

I deep condition my hair every single time I wash my hair and that is because I know how beneficial it is to my hair. While my weak transitioning hair is being strengthened to avoid breakage at the line of demarcation my natural hair, which is supposedly growing out healthy, is being protected from all kinds of damage (the sun, manipulation, chemical treatments, etc). 聽However, this weekly practice can add time to an already lengthily wash day. If this is a concern to you, you can add heat to your deep conditioning treatment.

Adding heat has its advantages as it increases the benefits of your deep conditioner or mask and shortens your washing routine. 聽It’s a win-win situation and this way you won’t have any excuses to skip your treatments. When you use a聽deep conditioner you are providing聽your hair with moisturising and nourishing ingredients that are combined to protect, restore and give life back to your hair whether it is healthy or damaged.

Add heat to this and all the benefits of your mask will be enhanced. Heat opens the cuticle layers of the hair and allows all the magic to penetrate more easily and work inside the structure of the hair, thus caring for your hair from inside out more effectively. Here are a few ways you can add head to your treatments.

1| Hair Steamer

Ezeso 2 in 1 Hair STeamer

Using a hair steamer is one of the best ways to add heat to your deep conditioner and moisture to your hair. The water steam will create a warm environment that will open the hair’s cuticles and allow your mask to work more effectively and water to penetrate more easily. If you have high porosity hair this will be a good acquisition as your hair as difficulties letting anything in. 聽With a steamer such as ZJchao 2 in 1 Steamer, your hair will be more manageable, moisturised and stronger. It will also help with scalp problems such as itchiness or dandruff you only need to use it for 20 minutes to get all the benefits. The only thing you might not like with the hair steamer is the price, however, it is a good investment and most聽of them聽can also be used as face steamers. So you’ll be able to use it for your hair and beauty treatments. Who doesn’t want beautiful hair and skin?

2| Microwavable Heating Caps

Although not as good as the steamer this little hair accessory is easy and convenient to use. These caps have the added advantage of not having any plugs or cords, you won’t need to stay put in one place waiting for your treatment to end. You can maximise your time and get dressed, put some makeup on or simply do some chores around the house. There are several options available in the market and the prices are much more reasonable than the steamer. The LookGreat Heat Wrap聽or the Hair Therapy Wrap聽are such examples. These wraps or caps have gel packs that are placed in the actual wrap.聽You only聽need to put聽your wrap聽in the聽microwave for the recommended amount of time to get 30 to 40 minutes of continuous heat.

3| Hooded or Bonnet Dryer

If you happen to have a hooded dryer you can also take advantage of it聽to get the most of out your treatment masks. If you’re thinking of investing on one the retail prices can vary significantly depending on whether you want a standing or small portable dryer. The bonnet dryer will be a more affordable聽solution you only need to attach the soft bonnet to your blow dryer. I believe聽we all have a blow dryer in the house and if you don’t you should get one as you can use it to聽diffuse your hair, for your treatments masks, blow drying, removing excess water from hair and much more. Have a look at the Remington Pro Dryer Kit, it comes with a few accessories to get you started.

4| Hot Towel

TowelsThis is perhaps a forgotten way to add heat to your deep conditioner and is one I used regularly a long time ago. Sure it will be a bit messy, but if you happen to go on a vacation and have no access to the previous suggestions you can always grab a towel, open the hot water tap and you got yourself a hot towel to apply on your hair. At home immerse the towel in hot water, squeeze the聽excess water聽and wrap it around your hair. Once you feel the towel is cold repeat the process until 20 to 30 minutes have passed. Yes, I know it’s laborious and maybe even messy, but when all else is not an option you have聽this alternative.

5| Heat Your Deep Conditioner

Ok, guys, I’m not talking about heating聽up your deep conditioner to boiling point. Please don’t do this as it is not good for your hair and it will probably make your mask useless. The best way for you to do this is to place a container with the mask inside another container with hot or boiling water. Let it warm聽up and apply it on your hair. Although it won’t be as effective as using continuous heat, it will jumpstart the process.

  1. Weird I never knew people use heat on their hair when they’re conditioning, let alone know it was beneficial in any way. Honestly, it looks relaxing and soothing either way so I bet it’d be worth doing once or twice 馃槈

Thanks for introducing this to me, now I gotta look more into heating my hair!

    1. Hi Matt,

Yes, women are weird! 馃檪 The things we do for good hair, but it’s been proven to help our hair. So why not? Specially when it’s damaged and needs it so much.

  2. Hey Monica,
Cool I never knew about the heating caps and bonnet dyrer, might just get me one of those! This is very off topic question but is there a way to revitalize my hair? I swim a lot but lately, my hair is turning from shiny black to dry brown and people say that it’s the lack of vitamins in my hair caused by the strong chlorine. Maybe there’s a specific product you’d could recommend?

    1. Hi Riaz,

If you swim a lot you should also be using a clarifying shampoo to remove the chlorine on your hair. If this is not something you do your hair will become dull and dry and will eventually break. If you do clarify your hair do you follow it with a deep conditioning treatment? Clarifying shampoos are very dry to the hair and you need to replenish it’s moisture. Read this article on clarifying solutions and this one on clarifying.

    2. After you have dep conditioned your hair (lots of methods and instructions online..) I suggest you apply conditioner to your hair before going in the pool. At a bre minimum, make sure you get your hair soaking wet with shower water before swimming – it will absorb less of the chlorinated water and help prevent further damage.

      1. Hi TheMathDiva! There are some products in the market that will offer hair protection from the Summer known offenders (UV ray, chlorinated/sea water), however, and as you rightly mention, the application of a hair conditioner can also help and offers a cheaper option (which doesn’t offer as much protection, but still protects). I also share that tip and others in this post for Summer hair care, which we are now approaching. 馃檪

  3. Hi Ana,

As you know, I am always looking for ways to add moisture to long and brittle hair. I have been using coconut oil after reading your article and totally love it.

I like the heat tips that you are suggesting here especially the hair therapy wrap and the hot towel (I never thought about that). I think I can easily do them at home without too much hassle.

Would you suggest that I do it together with the coconut oil application?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Cathy,

Coconut oil is amazing, in the beginning I didn’t like the smell, but now I’m in love with it. Yes there is no harm in mixing a little bit of coconut oil with you deep conditioner and applying it on your hair. It’s wonderful, add the therapy wrap or the hot towel and your hair will thank you for it.

  4. great content on curly hair. My sister has ferociously curly hair and is always trying to “tame the beast”. I will definitely refer her to this page!

Side note: i really like your overall them, The name and everything else matches very well. You should be ranking and banking in no time!

    1. Hello Damian,

Glad you found the article so good you are going to pass it on to your sister. I site is moving along great, but a few changes are coming…hopefully good ones fr the visitors.

  5. Hi Monica,
I have finally found a website for my naturally curly hair and me. I use to blow it dry straight and follow that up with a flat iron. I finally got tired of spend an hour on my hair every day and I decided to go with my natural curls. I love it. I like your idea of using hot towels to wrap your hair for a deeper conditioning treatment. I will have to try that. Wow! I am so excited to find your web site. I have bookmarked it and I will be coming back for regular visits. Thanks for a great article.

    1. Hi Val,

I’m glad you found the place to look for information to care for your curly hair, it needs TLC. The hot towel tip is one I used myself a long time ago and I think is useful if you don’t have access to the other options. Looking forward to seeing you here more often. Thank you.

  6. Always a pleasure to visit the Curly Hair Lounge!
Reading this article reminds me of “Hair Day” when I was a kid.
That was the day when the neighborhood ladies would get together and do one another’s hair…And gossip!

I would try to listen in but they would always send me outside so I never got to hear too much!

When they got done, they would call me back in to take out the trash they made. But at least I got a soda pop out of it!
Out of curiosity, is this something that should be done daily, weekly or an a wider time frame?

    Best Of Luck!

    Marant

    1. Hi Marant! I got you going on memory lane, and it seems it was a good journey. As for deep conditioning, hopefully, it should be done once a week or twice a month depending on you needs. All the best

  7. Our family use the Hair Therapy Wrap and The Huetiful Hair Steamer – With Healing Herbs by Rene Natural Organic prtoucds they work well for our hair.

    1. Hi Elmostafa! I can see you are all geared up! 馃檪 Do You use them frequently and where do you see the most benefits when using them?

  8. I have never heard of microwavable heating caps! That is probably the best invention I’ve heard for hair. My hair needs to be wrapped many times because it’s just so dry from the climate I am living in. I am going to bookmark your site and come back to it to learn all the ways I can take better care of my hair, and will probably buy the microwavable heating cap! Thanks!!
