Troubleshooting The Green House Effect Regimen – Common Issues

Trableshouting The Green House Effect Common Issues

I recently wrote an article here about the Green House Effect (GHE) hair  regimen explaining how good it could be for achieving a well moisturised natural hair and for increasing your hair’s growth rate. Many have sworn by it and I believe it is a fairly simple regimen to follow with seemingly high benefits. Nevertheless, a reader’s question on that post compelled to write this follow-up article trying to address possible doubts about the regimen and reasons why it might not be working. So today let’s try troubleshooting the Green House Effect regimen.

Common Problems And Troubleshoots

Itchiness – Feel like you’re scratching your head like a mutt dog? Yeah, this is definitely not a good thing to have and there are a few reasons why this could be happening.

1# First of all, make sure you are not applying your butter or oil directly onto your scalp. Your scalp needs to “breed” and doing this will only clog your pores plus, this will attract dirt and dust which will increase itchiness. Only put oil/butter along the length of your hair leaving maybe 2 or 3 inches from your roots.Castor Oil

2# Are you using castor oil as your moisturising oil? Then it might be a god idea to switch to a lighter oil. Castor oil is a thick oil that can clog your pores and many have complained of itchiness after using it. So, try this out and see if it works. (check 3 Best Oils to Begin Your Journey)

3# Do you usually sweat from your scalp and feel that the salt and sweat make your scalp itchy? Well, if you have this problem you can easily solve it by simply rinsing your head with water and giving yourself a good head massage.

Smelly Hair – This is another obstacle you might run into while doing the GHE that can actually make you quit the regimen. I get you girl, no one wants their hair to smell like dirty socks. The solution might be simpler that you think.

1# If the odor is not that strong you can very easily rinse your hair with water and massage your scalp to remove any dirt and dust.

2# If you think your hair is way too smelly than I advise you to co-wash your hair, this will eliminate any strong odor. You can then proceed with the GHE regimen as normal.

Oily Hair – Feel as if you’re staining your clothes and your hair looks like it has been dipped in oil?

1# I’m sorry to say this, but you might be the problem here! You are heavy handed when it comes to applying products on your hair? When doing the GHE you only need a very small amount of butter/oil per hair section. You will learn that a lot isn’t always better and a little goes a long way! In fact, in this case, it’s not good at all as you’ve discovered by now. Check out this video of GHE regimen to see how much product is used.

2# – If you are using castor oil your hair may look and feel greasy. As said before, this oil is thick not as easy to apply on hair as other oil, and because of this you could be using more which will give you the greasy look that is so off trend. Think about diluting it with another oil such as extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil or switching to another oil.

3# – Although the GHE will get you best results when done as often and as long as possible which would imply that you apply butter/oil every time you do it, you don’t always need to do this. If you feel your hair is moisturised enough you can skip putting in more butter/oil. Only do this if you feel you need to just spritz your hair with water (if needed) and put the plastic cap on. You know your hair best so you’ll know what to do.

Washing Once a Month – If you’re used to washing your hair once or twice every week  this part of the regimen could be hard. The reason this is so is to not strip your hair of all the sebum especially if you use a conventional shampoo or low-poo shampoo. This regimen advises the use of 100% natural ingredients and products which they say eliminates many of the problems discussed in here so far. Nevertheless, there is always a few things you can do.

1# – A common reason why you feel you need to wash your hair more frequently is because of a workout routineShower you’re doing. If you’re like me, you likely sweat from  your scalp and it feels dirty or it itches and you just need to wash it. The first thing you can do is to rinse and massage your hair with water. If you feel it’s not sufficient you can co-wash your hair.  Minimise the use of shampoo/low-poo shampoo to only 1 – 2 times a month and co-wash when you feel you need to, this way you won’t be robbed of all sebum.

2# – You feel you can’t go from washing 4 times a month to only washing 1 – 2 a month or you sweat easily from your scalp. If this is how you feel this if fine, just follow the previous suggestions and you should be fine.

Last Considerations

As you can see the GHE regimen can be quite flexible to your needs. If you follow the rules you should be able to achieve increased hair growth and well moisturised, soft and shiny tresses. However, you must be aware that adjusting some of the rules to fit your  needs may not guarantee you the same results as those you “follow the rules by the letter”. Either way, if you don’t increase your growth rate you can always have incredibly moisturised hair.

Have I covered all the issues with the GHE regimen? Do you have any issues that are not listed here? Tell me what do you do to troubleshoot the GHE regimen.

  1. Hi Monica,
I was out surfing the net and came across your site…Very detailed and useful information you have here! My buddy’s wife just opened a beauty salon, She’s always looking for new ideas. I’ll be sure to tell her about your article, and your site! Great post!

    1. Hi Marant, I’m glad you landed here on my site and found the information useful and appealing enough to share with your friends.

  2. Oily scalp with clogged pores is always the root of many hair problems. Especially oily hair. Thanks for this very informative article. I learn something today.

  3. Castor oil is moisturizing, making it great for dry hair. Castor oil can also help soothe an itchy scalp and help reduce dandruff. Castor oil may help hair grow stronger and thicker. It can also be used as a remedy for hair loss

    1. Hello Keitha,

Castor oil is a very well know and used oil in the natural hair community, but is one I wouldn’t recommend using directly on your hair. It is very thick and similar in consistency to car oil and, like it, not easy to remove. If you consider that most people co-wash and do DIY shampoo concoctions these are not able to successfully remove castor oil from the hair. So with frequent oil application and inefficient removal, it creates layers and layers of buildup that prevent successful hair moisture. (Again, even a sulphate free shampoo wouldn’t be able to remove all oil and eventually buildup would happen and with time more and more difficult to remove).

Oils do not provide moisture, they are occlusives, when applied on the hair they create a barrier that prevents moisture and other like-ingredients to penetrate the hair and therefore moisturise the hair. Water is the only true moisturiser our hair needs and I’ve learned this throughout my hair journey (though I never like using castor oil). If you consider that when we’re thirsty we drink water and not oil then why would we give our hair oil? Oil and water don’t mix, so if you apply oil (that is hard to remove) first how will the water get it?

Though castor oil is not scientifically proven to grow hair, treat hair loss or make it thicker I do believe that some people do benefit from it, however, I also believe it is best used in a product formulation where it is broken down into small molecules that are able to provide far more benefits to the hair. When applied directly, the oil molecules are too big and the oil just sits on top giving hair a greasy look and feel to the touch.

I hope you consider what I’ve just said and start incorporating products in your hair regimen that have your favourite oils. 😉

  4. Hi Monica,
You advocate only washing your hair once a month, when using the GHE method. I ask as I’m prone to an itchy scalp.

So don’t we ever oil our scalps?

    1. Hi Ann-Marie. I don’t advocate washing your hair once a month. This post merely explains what the GHE is and how it works. I actually strongly advocate shampooing your hair weekly (sulphate-free/low-poo shampoo). As for using oils in your hair routine and have moved away from this practice and found it can set your hair back. Please read my more recent posts. Thank you
